You might wanna read the following as a kind of contraction.
Think: attention, via the object of its negation. Sort of a procedural draft.

Number Three. Step up to the interlocutor. Assume their position, won’t you?
Number Two. Presume the fold. Or locate its fault.
Number One. Simply impose your own, apparent intimation.

They'd say: for it shall not be held, lightly.
